Scrapped laptop battery lit up in India
Although many shops in Bangalore are not connected to the grid, thanks to a new technology called “UrJarâ€, the night in India has slowly begun to shine. Developed by the IBM Institute of India, this technology can be used to refurbish obsolete laptop batteries into a battery pack that can power lighting, cell phones, and fans. With 40% of the world’s population still living in areas that lack reliable power supplies, this technology can not only bring light to it, but also provide backup power for places where electricity is urgently needed. Every year around the world will waste about 50 million laptop batteries. Are these batteries really useless? not necessarily. The cells in these batteries still have a certain degree of activity and can be removed to power low-energy devices. The team led by IBM scientist Vikas Chadan took the lithium batteries out of used laptop batteries and made them into battery packs. They added charging circuits, converters, and other electronic components needed to power external devices on refurbished batteries. With this configuration, UrJar can power a 3-watt LED bulb, a 6W DC fan, and a 3.5-watt cell phone charger for 4 hours. UrJar is Hindi, translated meaning "energy box." Researchers have developed three prototypes UrJar and provided them to five street vendors in Bangalore. During the test, they found that after a single charge, UrJar can be used for up to 3 days if it is lighted for 4 to 6 hours per day. This is a huge improvement over the existing lighting equipment of street vendors, who usually can only use less than 3 hours and need to recharge every day. For vendors, this not only provides them with reliable lighting, but also extends business hours. Researchers estimate that they can develop 1,000 UrJars at a price of about 600 rupees (about 10 US dollars). Material costs include packaging, electronic components, 3-watt LED light bulbs, and cell phone chargers. However, IBM does not intend to sell this product, but hopes to provide it to developing countries free of charge to reduce the "energy poverty" situation, and at the same time recycle electronic waste that might have been thrown into the garbage dump. Old battery processing basics UrJar's tests let us understand one thing: Most of the obsolete rechargeable batteries are not completely out of use. So, what should you do with old batteries? Can refer to the content: - Alkaline batteries: These types of non-rechargeable batteries are commonly used in toys, smoke alarms, or remote controls, such as batteries #7, #5, or #1. When these batteries are depleted, they can be thrown directly into the trash in multiple states in the United States. California is the only state that requires the recycling of such batteries. The state treats waste alkaline batteries as hazardous waste. - Rechargeable batteries: These batteries should be recycled because they often contain heavy metals. When the battery voltage is higher than 9 volts, both ends should be taped. - Battery for portable electronic devices: Remove the notebook or mobile phone battery and send it to a large retailer for recycling. In addition, mobile operators also have corresponding repurchase programs that specifically recycle old phones, tablets, or used batteries. - Button batteries: These batteries are often used in watches and hearing aids. They contain a lot of reusable metals and should be recycled. - Car battery: This battery should be sent to a dedicated waste management center. But you can also send it back to many car dealers or service centers for processing. If you do not know where the recycling center in your area is located, you can find it through the interactive Call2Recycle map.
The LED light source (which is often also called a fibre optic projector or fibre optic illuminator) provides the illumination to any fibre optic lighting system. They contain the lamp or LED and any additional control gear to provide special lighting effects.
LED light sources is broadly split into three categories - RGBW units which are suitable for sensory and decorative lighting systems; white light only which are great for illumination inside display cabinets and for architectural lighting systems. Finally we also offer white light models with traditional effect wheels. These are used in the same way as in older halogen or metal halide light sources and provide easily controllable colour change or twinkle effects.
