Lead is a soft, bluish-gray metal with a bright metallic luster when fractured. It has a density of 11.35 g/cm³ in the solid state, a melting point of 327.4°C, and a boiling point of 1525°C. Pure lead is one of the softest metals, with a Mohs hardness of only 1.5. Despite its malleability, it has very low ductility and is not resistant to tensile forces. Its thermal conductivity is extremely low—only about 7.5% that of silver—and its electrical conductivity is also poor, at just 7.77% of silver's. In terms of chemical stability, lead is highly resistant to corrosion under normal conditions. It does not react with dry air at room temperature. However, it dissolves readily in dilute nitric acid but remains insoluble in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids at room temperature. When exposed to these acids, a protective layer of PbCl₂ or PbSO₄ forms on the surface, preventing further corrosion. Lead also shows no reaction with alkalis, ammonia, chlorine solutions, or organic acids and esters. Lead has a wide range of industrial applications due to its resistance to acids and alkalis. It is commonly used in the production of chemical equipment, electrolyzers in metallurgical plants, communication cable sheaths, and storage batteries. Lead-based alloys, such as Babbitium, are used in bearings, while lead is also employed in soldering, ceramics, glass, rubber, and petroleum refining. Additionally, lead’s ability to absorb radioactive rays makes it valuable in the X-ray and nuclear industries. It is also used in printing alloys and other specialized applications. Lead is found in more than 700 locations across China, including key regions such as Xilin in Heilongjiang Province, Hongtunshan and Qingchengzi in Liaoning, Caijiayingzi in Hebei, Baiyinuo, Dongshengmiao, Jiashengpan, and Jiaokou in Inner Mongolia, as well as areas in Gansu, Shaanxi, Qinghai, Hunan, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Sichuan. There are over 42 types of lead minerals in China, with 11 of them having industrial significance. In lead-zinc deposits, various elements such as copper, tungsten, tin, molybdenum, tantalum, arsenic, mercury, cobalt, nickel, gold, silver, platinum, rare earths, and scattered metals often occur together. These associated elements should be considered for recycling. Additionally, oilfield water from the U.S. may contain significant amounts of lead and zinc, highlighting the need for proper environmental management.
