Unit plans to save money for private extinguisher inspections

In response to growing concerns over fire safety, CPPCC members have called for stricter oversight of the production, sale, and maintenance of fire equipment. Recent inspections in the city have highlighted a serious issue: many fire extinguishers are not undergoing their required annual inspections, which can render them ineffective during emergencies. According to local regulations, fire extinguishers must be inspected once a year to ensure they remain functional. However, investigations reveal that some organizations still neglect this critical requirement, either due to negligence or cost-cutting measures. Some even resort to using unlicensed companies to pass inspections, putting public safety at risk. One such case was reported by a citizen with code D00753, who pointed out that numerous buildings and businesses are equipped with fire extinguishers, but many lack proper annual checks. In the event of a fire, these devices may fail to operate correctly, delaying response times and increasing risks. The citizen urged authorities to take stronger action to manage this issue. Local neighborhood committees have also become involved in monitoring fire equipment. A shop owner near Jingguang Bridge mentioned that residents' committees conduct regular checks on fire extinguishers as part of safety responsibility agreements. However, enforcement remains inconsistent, especially for smaller businesses. A representative from a fire equipment company explained that while larger organizations typically follow the inspection schedule, smaller units often lack the awareness or resources to comply. “We keep records of our clients, and we proactively contact those who need inspections,” she said. “But for small businesses, it’s up to them to reach out.” Despite these efforts, some informal companies continue to offer low-cost, substandard services. At one fire equipment store, a customer expressed surprise when he learned the repair cost was around 30 yuan. An employee, Ms. Gao, revealed that legitimate inspections require thorough testing and refilling, costing at least 20 yuan. “If someone offers it for 10 yuan, it’s likely just a fake certificate after a quick refill,” she said. Ms. Gao also noted that some businesses have returned to official providers after experiencing problems with informal ones. One security company had its fire extinguisher repaired by an unlicensed firm, only to find that the dry powder failed to spray properly during a recent incident. CPPCC members emphasized the importance of strict regulation. They pointed out that many unit managers ignore fire department guidelines, skipping necessary maintenance for years. “It’s not uncommon for staff to choose cheaper options, leading to poor quality work or no certification at all,” one member said. To address these issues, the CPPCC has recommended that relevant authorities enhance supervision across the entire supply chain of fire equipment. This includes cracking down on illegal vendors and ensuring that all maintenance is carried out according to safety standards. As fire safety becomes increasingly important, the need for accountability and transparency in the fire equipment industry has never been more urgent. With proper oversight, the risk of life-threatening failures can be significantly reduced. China Labor Insurance Network
