Inferior tiles can cause cancer, green building materials, gimmicks
Earlier this year, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine conducted a comprehensive inspection of 364 types of ceramic tile products from 272 companies across eight provinces, including Fujian, Shandong, Guangdong, Sichuan, and Shaanxi. The results revealed that 97 products failed to meet quality standards. Among these, the most concerning issue was the excessive levels of radionuclides in three types of tiles. Experts warned that prolonged exposure to such radiation could significantly increase the risk of cancer in humans. The unqualified tiles included two porcelain polished tiles from Guangdong Bohua Ceramics Co., Ltd., and one ceramic tile from Guangdong Jiamei Ceramics Co., Ltd. When the author visited a specialty store selling Bohua ceramics, the sales representative mentioned that the store typically only keeps samples on display. Customers are encouraged to inspect the samples and then place orders directly with the manufacturer. According to the staff, these specific batches have been excluded from the current inventory, and no customers have reported any issues with the affected products so far. Another problematic tile brand, which had also been flagged for environmental concerns, was not found at any local dealerships during the author's visit. Some Environmental Labels Are Fake The emergence of potentially carcinogenic tiles in the market has surprised many consumers. Some people expressed disbelief, saying they never imagined that tiles could pose such a serious health risk. Others told the author that while everyone is aware of the importance of choosing eco-friendly furniture and materials, it’s hard to know which products to trust when nearly every item in building material stores claims to be “green†or “eco-friendly.†In a decorated city in Chengdong, the author observed that from ceramic tiles and bathroom fixtures to flooring, paints, and cabinets, almost all products were labeled as “green†or “environmentally friendly.†Some even claimed to have antibacterial, anti-mold, or other beneficial properties. However, when the author asked to see the hazardous substance test reports, some businesses responded that the documents were only available at their headquarters and couldn’t be provided on-site. The author learned that recently, the Environmental Certification Center under the State Environmental Protection Administration investigated several building material markets in Nanjing and Shanghai. They found that a large portion of the so-called “eco-friendly†materials were actually counterfeit. Experts explained that in addition to the internationally recognized ISO 14000 certification, there are currently three main environmental certifications in China: the “China Environmental Labeling†(10-ring) by the State Environmental Protection Administration, the “CQC Quality Environmental Products†by the China Quality Certification Center, and the “Zhongcheng Logo†(CTC) certification. “Green Building Materials†Is a Misleading Term “The term ‘green building materials’ is misleading,†said a professional in the building materials industry. “Strictly speaking, China doesn’t have officially defined green building materials. What exists are environmentally friendly materials that meet certain testing standards.†According to the author’s research, since 2002, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, along with other departments, implemented mandatory regulations limiting hazardous substances in interior decoration materials. These standards serve as basic market access requirements but are not equivalent to green product criteria. Harmful substances like formaldehyde and benzene are commonly found in coatings and adhesives, and the standards only set limits on their concentrations. Currently, China has not yet established official evaluation criteria for “green building materials.†The so-called “green†labels seen on many products are often just marketing tactics used by sellers to attract buyers.
