Scientists make the thinnest graphene "origami"
An ancient craft just got an extremely modern update. Today, researchers can stack graphene into origami shapes. This technology can be used to construct three-dimensional micro-structures like nano robots and flexible circuits. Graphene is favored for its various "extraordinary characteristics" - it is the hardest material studied so far and it is also a powerful electrical conductor. Researchers are using origami techniques to bend graphene into different shapes. However, Itai Cohen from Cornell University in New York, United States, said that no one has ever made origami folds on individual sheets of graphene. "Folding rules are the same at the macroscopic or microscopic scale," Cohen said. "Just because the atoms are too small and too fragile, it will be more difficult to fold multiple atoms at once." Cohen led the team to cover a single layer of vitreous silica that was only half a nanometer thick outside the monolayer graphene. They found that glass molecules react differently to their attached carbon atoms when heated, exposed to charge, or immersed in liquids with different pH values. These three reactions allowed the team to predict how the graphene sheets would expand or contract to produce instant folding. In the future, the team hopes that adding other compounds such as gold, semiconductors, and insulators will allow origami technology to create two-dimensional circuits that can be folded into any desired shape. “You can imagine printing the entire circuit on one such sheet and then folding it into a three-dimensional structure that can absorb light or do some calculations,†Cohen said. The team demonstrated the results at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society in Baltimore, Maryland. The quick stacking door has many functions such as heat preservation and cold preservation, insect and wind prevention, dust insulation and sound insulation. Widely used in underground parking lots, industrial plants, food, textiles, electronics, printing and packaging, automotive assembly, precision machinery, logistics and warehousing and other places.
