Soybean meal should only be replaced if alternative protein sources, such as other plant-based or animal-derived proteins, are significantly cheaper than soybean meal. Rapeseed seeds contain several undesirable compounds, including glucosinolates, erucic acid, tannins, and saponins, with glucosinolates being the most significant concern. Although glucosinolates themselves are not toxic, they can break down into harmful substances like isothiocyanates, oxazolidinediones, and nitriles under certain temperature and moisture conditions. These compounds can cause goiter, reduce growth rates, and impair reproductive performance in animals. For "double-low" rapeseed, which has reduced levels of these compounds, the feeding amount can be increased. However, it’s important to balance the amino acid profile of the diet when using rapeseed meal.
Cottonseed contains gossypol and cyclopropene fatty acids, both of which are harmful to animals, especially monogastric species. During oil extraction, heat from steaming and pressing causes most of the gossypol to bind with proteins and amino acids, forming bound gossypol, which is less toxic and not easily absorbed by animals. However, free gossypol remains in the cake and oil, and this form is more dangerous, particularly for young animals. It can lead to growth retardation, reduced reproductive performance, and even death. The use of cottonseed cake should be limited based on the level of free gossypol in the feed. In cases where high-quality raw materials and fresh green feeds are available, cottonseed cake can be used without restrictions. However, for monogastric animals like chickens, it is best to use detoxified cottonseed cake. In broiler diets, it's advisable to use cottonseed cake with fewer shells to avoid affecting growth. Chickens are more tolerant to gossypol than pigs, but feeding them cottonseed cake may cause discoloration of eggs during storage, such as pink albumen and greenish-yellow or dark red yolk spots. Seedlings should avoid cottonseed products to protect reproductive health. Additionally, when formulating diets with cottonseed cake, special attention should be given to lysine content, as cottonseed is low in lysine and has poor utilization, requiring supplementation to maintain balanced nutrition.
