The ability to create 3D CAD surface models is a key indicator of one's proficiency in 3D modeling, and it often presents a challenge for beginners. In this June tutorial, I'll take the electric kettle as an example to guide you through the process of surface design. The software used here is Zhongwang 3D, which offers a hybrid modeling approach that makes it easier for beginners to handle both solid and surface interactions effectively.
In this tutorial, we’ll focus on modeling the spout and lid, which are commonly considered difficult parts of the design. Let’s walk through the steps together to build a detailed electric kettle model.
**Step 1: Sketching and Rotating**
Start by inserting sketch 1 on the XZ plane and drawing the shape shown in Figure 1. Accuracy isn't crucial at this stage—just ensure the contact area between the lid and the body aligns with the XY plane. After exiting the sketch, rotate it around the Z-axis using the Rotate tool, as seen in Figure 2. Then, use the Stretch function to extrude the bottom edge of the pot, following the parameters in Figure 3. Repeat this process to create a cylindrical column, placing it at the center of the base.
**Step 2: Splitting and Creating the Lid**
Use the Shape - Split tool to divide the pot body along the XY plane, separating it into the body and the lid. Hide the body and edit the lid separately. Insert sketch 2 on the XZ plane, draw an arc with its lowest point on the Y-axis, then rotate it to form a curved surface. Divide the surface into two parts, as shown in Figure 8.
**Step 3: Shelling and Trimming**
Hide the lower half of the lid, insert sketch 3 on the XY plane, and draw the shape in Figure 9. Perform a Stretch - Subtract operation to create a shell with a thickness of -1. Use the Face Offset tool to offset the crescent-shaped section by 12 units. Insert sketch 4 on the XZ plane, draw the shape in Figure 11, and perform a Stretch - Subtract operation. Be sure to check the "Retain Outline" option before cutting. After stretching, trim the shape using the offset surface, rounding the edges for a smooth finish.
**Step 4: Adding the Spout**
Insert sketch 5 on the XZ plane and extrude it to form the spout. Trim the shape using the side of the pot body, keeping only the outer part. Offset the outer surface outward by 5 units and use this to trim the shape again, rounding the edges. Apply the same method to create the power indicator.
**Step 5: Designing the Handle**
Insert sketch 6 on the YZ plane and draw a curve with two sections aligned on the Y-axis. On the XZ plane, draw two ellipses and insert reference planes at their endpoints. Draw another ellipse on each reference plane and use the Drive Curve tool to extrude the ellipses along the curve. Ensure the filter is set to "curve" when selecting the ellipses.
**Step 6: Refining the Handle and Button**
Trim the handle using the same method as step 4. Insert a reference plane and draw an ellipse to subtract part of the handle. Extrude the sketch without retaining the outline, then draw a new sketch on the YZ plane to refine the button. Use the Move tool to adjust the position and angle of the button.
**Step 7: Creating the Spout Surface**
Insert sketch 11 on the XZ plane and form a V-shape using the stretching and trimming techniques from step 4. Shell the shape with a thickness of 0.8. Create sketches on the top and YZ planes, then use the U/V Surface tool to generate the outer and inner surfaces of the spout. Use the N-Sided Surface tool to repair the top surface.
**Step 8: Making the Water Hole**
Insert sketch 14 on the XZ plane and draw several circles. Use the Stretch - Subtract function to cut out the water hole. On the XY plane, draw a circle tangent to a reference line, project it onto the surface, and use it to split the face into two parts for easier coloring.
Finally, apply a surface style to color the model and complete the 3D modeling of the electric kettle.
