Introduction of Changchun Flower Culture Method

Periwinkle, also known as *Catharanthus roseus*, is a beautiful flowering plant that's easy to propagate and maintain. One of the most effective methods for growing periwinkle is through cuttings. When taking cuttings, it’s important to focus on keeping the cutting environment warm and moist. The best time to take cuttings is in spring when the plant is actively growing. To begin, select a tender branch from a new growth area or a soft tip from an older branch. Make sure the cutting includes two to three leaves and cut it just below a node. Place the bottom of the cutting into moist sand or a well-draining potting mix. Keep the temperature between 20°C and 25°C during the rooting process. After planting, cover the pot with a plastic bag or clear container to maintain humidity. Place it in a cool, well-ventilated area and wait for roots to develop—this usually takes around 20 days. Another popular method is water propagation. Simply place the cutting in a clean glass of water, making sure to change the water every two days to keep it fresh and free from bacteria. You can add a few drops of a diluted liquid fertilizer to encourage root growth. Within about 20 days, you should see small roots forming. Once your periwinkle is established, proper care is essential for healthy growth. First, ensure it receives plenty of sunlight. Periwinkle thrives in bright light, so place it near a sunny window or outdoors where it can get at least six hours of direct sun daily. If natural light is limited, consider using a grow light. Watering should be done carefully. Periwinkle doesn’t like overly wet soil, so avoid overwatering. Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry. During rainy seasons, bring the plant indoors or ensure good drainage if it's outside. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is a common cause of death in periwinkle plants. Fertilizing should be done regularly but not excessively. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every ten days, alternating with a slow-release compound fertilizer. Also, add a layer of base fertilizer at the bottom of the pot to provide long-term nutrients. Pruning and topping are important for maintaining a compact and attractive shape. Remove any dead, weak, or leggy branches to promote bushier growth. Pinching back the tips of young plants encourages branching and helps the plant look fuller. Lastly, periwinkle prefers warmer temperatures. It grows best when daytime temperatures are above 15°C. In colder climates, bring the plant indoors during the night to protect it from frost. Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 5°C, as this can cause damage or even kill the plant. With proper care, periwinkle can bloom beautifully throughout the growing season, adding color and charm to your garden or indoor space.
