Mid-term management of peppers and pest control

Pepper plants are currently entering a critical phase of both vegetative and reproductive growth, which also marks the peak season for pest activity. To ensure a bountiful harvest, proper field management and effective pest control are essential. This period is crucial for setting the foundation for high yields. According to the Chinese Pesticide Network, here are some key recommendations for vegetable farmers to follow: First, watering and fertilization: If there has been no rain for 5–7 days, it's advisable to water the plants with small amounts of water. Apply 1000–2000 kg of organic fertilizer per acre, along with 10–15 kg of diammonium phosphate and 5–10 kg of potassium sulfate. Avoid flooding during the rainy season, especially in July and August. It’s important to cultivate the soil regularly to keep it loose, and shallow tilling (2–4 cm deep) is recommended. Second, pest management: Several major diseases and pests threaten pepper crops. These include viral diseases, blight, and fungal infections, as well as pests such as cotton bollworms, red spider mites, aphids, and diamondback moths. 1. **Viral disease**: Controlling aphids is key to preventing virus spread. Use a mixture of imidacloprid (1500–2000 times dilution) and virus A (500 times dilution). Alternatively, use virus spirit or plant disease solution at 500 times dilution. For additional protection, combine imidacloprid (1500–2000 times) with Feng Biling (4000–5000 times). 2. **Fungal disease**: This is a major cause of branch and plant death. Apply a mix of cream (600 times dilution) and Feng Biling (4000–5000 times). For each acre, sprinkle 3 kg of 96% copper sulfate after watering. 3. **Fusarium wilt**: Use a product like Atrophic Cotton Rehabilitation Spray for treatment. 4. **Cotton bollworm**: Control using pyrethroid insecticides combined with avermectin, or carbamate insecticides mixed with chlorpyrifos. 5. **Red spider mites**: Apply avermectin after 5 p.m. for best results. 6. **Diamondback moth**: This pest has multiple generations and strong resistance. Avoid continuous use of single pesticides. Instead, use biological pesticides whenever possible. Consider using thiazolonitrile + chlorfenapod, pyrethroid + BT, or a combination of avermectin (4000–5000 times) and pyrethroid (2000–3000 times). It is strictly prohibited to use highly toxic pesticides such as methomyl, parathion, methyl parathion, monocrotophos, and phorate. Also, avoid using nitrate-based fertilizers to prevent environmental harm and maintain crop quality. Effective and sustainable pest management not only protects the crop but also ensures long-term agricultural health.
