On the evening of September 2, Beijing time, Airbus plans to join hands with the South African National Aerospace Center (NASC) to jointly fund a research project to use fuel cells as aircraft power.

Airbus has locked hydrogen fuel cells as a zero-emission alternative power unit. On-board fuel cell technology can reduce fuel consumption and aircraft load, has the advantages of zero emission and low noise, and can also provide internal water supply for aircraft.

Airbus had previously tested the use of fuel cells to drive independent emergency power systems on aircraft, but has not yet used multi-functional fuel cells to completely replace the power system for testing.
