The positioning of the gas spring support is crucial and can be optimized based on the structural characteristics of the gas spring. The key performance indicators of a gas spring are its working stroke and supporting force. To enhance this, this paper presents a VB-based system designed to optimize the layout of the gas spring support for passenger doors. This system allows users to input essential structural parameters through an interactive interface, enabling the software to calculate the optimal position of the fixed support and corresponding gas spring parameters.
The core idea behind the optimization process is that the user inputs initial gas spring parameters and the possible range for the support location. The system then automatically calculates the actual required support force (FS) across the entire working stroke and the actual force provided by the gas spring (FN). The goal is to find the bearing coordinates that minimize the value of 2(FS - FN) over the full working range.
The mathematical model used in the optimization includes the coordinates of point O3 in the XOY coordinate system as design variables, i.e., x = x1, x2 = x, y. The objective function is defined as f(x1, x2) = 2(FS - FN), subject to constraints such as l1 ≤ Fx1 ≤ l2, l3 ≤ Fx2 ≤ l4, F1min ≤ F ≤ F1max, F2min ≤ F ≤ F2max, and Lmax - Lmin ≤ Lxc. Here, l1, l2, l3, l4 represent the user-defined ranges for the support, while Fmax and Fmin are the maximum and minimum forces of the selected gas spring, and Lxc is the working stroke.
For example, when the coordinates of O3 are set at x0 = -100 mm, y0 = 490 mm, the working stroke is Lmax - Lmin = 187.3 mm, with a maximum force of Fmax = 2831.8 N and a minimum force of Fmin = 215.3 N. The value of 2(FS - FN) in this case is 29679 N. After inputting these values into the optimization software, along with initial parameters such as Fmax = 3000 N, Fmin = 500 N, Lxc = 190 mm, and Lmax = 570 mm, the system found that the optimized coordinates for O3 are x0 = -52 mm, y0 = 509 mm. At this position, the working stroke reduces to 176 mm, with Fmax = 2006 N and Fmin = 158 N, resulting in 2(FS - FN) = 26188 N. This represents a 11.8% reduction compared to the initial configuration.
This example demonstrates how optimizing the gas spring support position significantly reduces the force required to open the door, improving the ease of use. Moreover, the software enables designers to efficiently evaluate different gas spring options, providing a solid theoretical foundation for making informed decisions during the design process.
