Aluminum body reliable connection technology

[China Aluminum Industry Network] 1. Mechanical Connection Technology: Aluminum alloys are known for their high thermal conductivity, making traditional resistance spot welding not only energy-intensive but also difficult to maintain consistent quality. In contrast, foreign automakers have widely adopted mechanical connection techniques such as self-piercing riveting and self-tapping screws for joining aluminum components. These technologies are currently dominated by international companies like Henrob from the UK, Emhart from the US, and Bolhloff from Germany. To overcome these technical barriers, China must focus on independent innovation to develop its own mechanical connection equipment and processes with intellectual property rights, ensuring a competitive edge in the global market.

2. Welding Technology: When it comes to joining aluminum body parts, a variety of methods are used. Non-melting techniques such as lock riveting, self-cutting screws, self-tapping screws, punching, and adhesive bonding are common, while MIG welding remains widely applied. Additionally, laser welding (including laser beam welding and laser brazing) and hybrid laser-MIG arc welding are gaining popularity. Among these, MIG welding, laser welding, laser-MIG arc welding, and friction stir welding have become standard practices in the industry. A notable example is the BenzSL model that won the European Body-in-White Championship in 2012, where friction stir welding was extensively used for the first time. This technique significantly improved the structural rigidity of the vehicle body, with over 6,669 welds in total, showcasing its importance in modern automotive manufacturing.

3. Flexible Wrapping Technology: The demand for high-quality body panels and tight dimensional control has made traditional molding edging methods less effective due to their large size and limited flexibility. As a result, robotic roller hemming has emerged as a more adaptable solution. Established automotive equipment suppliers abroad, including German ThyssenKrupp, American Hirotec, German Edag, and British DVA, already offer advanced flexible aluminum edging technologies. Currently, most domestic suppliers of aluminum panel wrapping equipment are still foreign-based, highlighting the need for China to invest in and develop its own flexible wrapping solutions to reduce dependency and enhance technological autonomy.
