On July 19, 2013, updated inventory data for major steel warehouses in the Shanghai region was released. The rebar stock stood at 307,400 tons, marking a decrease of 0.11 million tons from the previous week’s figure on July 12. Meanwhile, wire rod inventory dropped by 0.01 million tons to 93,600 tons, while disc screw inventory rose slightly to 31,900 tons, up by 0.05 million tons compared to the prior week.
In addition, the Japan Network, which includes warehouses in Songjiang and other areas, reported a total of 358,600 tons of thread, down by 0.111 million tons from the same period last week. Wire rod inventory decreased by 0.01 million tons to 112,400 tons, and plate screw inventory increased by 0.07 million tons to 45,200 tons.
Looking at Shanghai's rebar inventory trend, the current level of 307,400 tons represents a 0.36% decline from the previous week, with the rate of decline narrowing. Compared to the same period in 2012, rebar inventory fell by 16,900 tons, or 11.67%, showing a slower rate of reduction than the previous week.
Nationally, the total rebar inventory across major cities reached 6,780,400 tons as of this week, a drop of 252,400 tons from the previous week, or 3.59%. Year-over-year, the inventory fell by 362,900 tons, or 5.08%, indicating an accelerated decline compared to the same period last year.
Regionally, rebar inventories continued to fall, with reductions observed across all areas. East China saw a drop of 47,100 tons, Central China by 29,200 tons, South China by 10,700 tons, Southwest China by 22,300 tons, North China by 34,400 tons, Northwest China by 46,000 tons, and Northeast China by 62,200 tons.
Major cities experienced significant inventory reductions. Dalian saw the largest drop at 44,000 tons, followed by Hangzhou (25,800 tons), Lanzhou (25,000 tons), Harbin (23,000 tons), and Wuhan (19,200 tons).
Despite the slowdown in downstream demand, market sentiment remained positive due to low inventory levels. In Shanghai, construction steel prices continued to rise, with HRB400 rebar at 20mm reaching 3,500 yuan/ton—up 60 yuan/ton from the previous Friday. Similarly, spiral steel prices showed strong momentum, with the 1401 contract closing at 3,692 yuan/ton, up 36 yuan/ton from the prior week.
Nationwide, construction steel prices also increased, with the average price of HRB400 rebar at 20mm across 24 cities reaching 3,578 yuan/ton—up 58 yuan/ton from the previous week. Fuzhou and Lanzhou saw the most significant price increases, rising by 140 yuan/ton and 100 yuan/ton respectively.
Looking ahead, despite weak demand, the current low inventory levels are expected to support prices. Steel mills may continue to raise prices, potentially triggering another upward movement in the market. While some regions like East China may see a slight slowdown in price growth, others such as South, Central, North, Southwest, and Northwest China are likely to experience more pronounced increases. With reduced production and export activity, inventories remain tight, and market confidence is expected to stay strong. As a result, domestic rebar prices may consolidate next week, but upward pressure is likely to persist.
