Abstract To accelerate the industrialization of graphene, China's Graphene Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance was officially established in Beijing on the 13th. This alliance was initiated by leading institutions such as Tsinghua University, the Institute of Metal Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing Kefu Nanotechnology Co., Ltd., the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Beijing Modern Huaqing Materials Technology Development Center. The alliance brings together 22 legal entities supported by the China Association for Industry-University-Research Cooperation. It includes 6 universities, 4 research institutes from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 17 enterprises, covering most of the key players in domestic graphene R&D and commercialization. The goal of the alliance is to establish an innovation system that is enterprise-driven, market-oriented, and integrates production, education, and research, aiming to promote the development of China’s graphene industry.
At the event, Mr. Shi Dingqi, former Secretary-General of the Ministry of Science and Technology, presented the award to the alliance. Gao Yunhu, Deputy Director of the Raw Materials Department at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, delivered a speech. He mentioned that the 12th Five-Year Plan for New Materials was released in 2012. At that time, graphene was not yet widely recognized, and its industrial application potential was unclear, so it wasn't included as a core focus in the plan. However, with future technological breakthroughs and practical applications, it may be given more attention in subsequent stages.
China has implemented various supportive policies for new materials, and analysts believe that Gao Yunhu’s remarks indicate that graphene is likely to receive increased policy support in the near future.
Graphene is known as one of the most promising materials due to its exceptional properties: it is the strongest, lightest, most conductive, and transparent material ever discovered. Its applications span across energy, biotechnology, water treatment, electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries, showing vast potential for future development.
Currently, the global graphene industry is still largely in the research and development phase. However, China has made significant progress in basic graphene research. The country holds the second-largest number of graphene patents worldwide, far exceeding those of other nations.
In the A-share market, several listed companies are considered relevant to the graphene concept, including China Baoan, Letong, Jinlu Group, Sinosteel Jitan, Fangda Carbon, and Gorgeous Family. These firms are closely watched by investors who are optimistic about the long-term growth potential of the graphene sector.
