Multi-band terminal development needs more efforts

At the "2013 China LTE Industry Development Summit," Zhang Yongsheng, a senior researcher from Como (Beijing) Communication Technology Research Center, shared insights into the commercial success of Japan's NTT DOCOMO in deploying LTE technology. During the event, he highlighted how DOCOMO has made significant progress in rolling out its high-speed mobile network.
Zhang noted that DOCOMO currently serves around 14 million LTE users, which makes up roughly 25% of its total subscriber base. He pointed out that the growth of LTE adoption has been much faster than that of WCDMA. While it took five years for WCDMA to reach 12 million users, LTE achieved the same milestone in just two years. This rapid expansion shows how well-structured and efficient DOCOMO’s deployment strategy has been.
As of June this year, DOCOMO had deployed approximately 30,000 LTE base stations across Japan. The company aims to increase this number to 50,000 by March 2014, with the goal of achieving full national coverage. Among these, 75Mbps base stations are the most commonly used, with over 17,300 already in place by June. By September, this number is expected to rise to 25,000. Additionally, DOCOMO has also started deploying 112.5Mbps high-speed base stations, covering 130 major cities as of June, with plans to expand to 150 cities by September.
In July, DOCOMO began pre-commercial testing of 150Mbps LTE in selected areas, with a full rollout planned for major Japanese cities starting in October. According to a third-party survey, DOCOMO leads the market in both LTE coverage and speed among Japanese operators.
Zhang also emphasized the importance of terminal development in building a sustainable LTE ecosystem. Initially, after launching commercial LTE in 2010, DOCOMO only offered one FDD data card. By mid-2011, the range of devices was limited to data cards and a few customized options. However, by the summer of 2012, the situation changed dramatically. DOCOMO launched a wide variety of LTE-enabled devices throughout the year, achieving 100% LTE support by the fall of 2012. This marked a key milestone in the maturity of LTE technology.
When discussing the global issue of frequency band fragmentation in LTE deployments, Zhang acknowledged that this is a widespread challenge requiring industry-wide collaboration. He noted that while China has a more favorable spectrum situation compared to Japan, where there are about six or seven different bands, the industry must push for multi-band terminal development to ensure seamless LTE services. From DOCOMO’s perspective, reusing existing 3G frequency bands for LTE has helped streamline the process and improve efficiency.
