The devices can communicate by reflecting these signals, eliminating the need for batteries or external power. As Dr. Shyam Gollakota, the lead researcher, explained, “We can turn the wireless signals around us into both energy and a medium for communication.†This technology has huge potential for applications like wearable tech, smart homes, and self-powered sensor networks.
The team has developed small, battery-free devices that use antennas to detect and reflect TV signals. These signals can then be picked up by other similar devices, allowing them to exchange information. This opens up exciting possibilities for the Internet of Things (IoT), where devices can connect without relying on traditional power sources.
In tests, the system was able to send 1 KB of data over a distance of up to 2.5 feet indoors. That’s enough to transmit basic information such as sensor readings, text messages, or contact details. Imagine having a sensor on your keychain that can alert you if you lose it. Or, if your phone runs out of battery, it could still send a pre-written message using the surrounding TV signals. While writing new messages might be tricky, the idea of sending simple alerts is already very promising.
Beyond personal use, this technology has broader applications. It could be used in buildings to monitor structural damage, or on bridges and vehicles to detect issues in real time. The devices are tiny and can be placed anywhere, making them ideal for large-scale monitoring systems.
