Select chemical pump sealing performance criteria

Leak-free operation is the ultimate goal of chemical equipment, and this demand has significantly driven the increasing adoption of magnetic pumps and shielded pumps. However, achieving complete leak-proof performance remains a challenge. Issues such as the lifespan of the isolation sleeve in magnetic pumps, the shielding sleeve in shielded pumps, material pitting, and the reliability of static seals still need improvement. Since chemical pumps often handle corrosive, toxic, or volatile media, their sealing performance is a key criterion for evaluating their quality. When selecting a chemical pump, several factors should be considered. First, the type of sealing is important. Static seals typically use gaskets or O-rings, with O-rings being the most common. For dynamic seals, packing seals are rarely used today, and mechanical seals are the preferred choice. Mechanical seals can be classified into single-acting and double-acting types, as well as balanced and unbalanced designs. Balanced mechanical seals are more suitable for high-pressure applications, usually when the pressure exceeds 1.0 MPa. Double-acting mechanical seals are ideal for high-temperature, crystallizing, viscous, particle-laden, or toxic and volatile media. In such cases, an isolation fluid is injected into the seal chamber, with the pressure generally 0.07 to 0.1 MPa higher than the medium pressure. Second, the choice of sealing materials is critical. Static seals in chemical pumps are commonly made from fluorocarbon elastomers, while PTFE is used in special situations. The materials for mechanical seals should be carefully selected—not all are made from carbide. Using carbide exclusively would significantly increase costs. Typically, the stationary ring is harder, while the rotating ring is softer, such as silicon carbide paired with graphite. These combinations are cost-effective and suitable for most applications. However, in special cases involving high temperatures or media with particles, both the stationary and rotating rings may need to be made of hard-to-hard materials, depending on the specific conditions. Chemical pumps are widely used across various sectors of the chemical industry. Domestic manufacturers now offer a range of models, including the IH stainless steel chemical pump, IHF fluoroplastic chemical pump, FSB fluoroplastic chemical pump, CQB magnetic drive pump, CQ magnetic pump, and FZB self-priming chemical pump. These pumps are extensively applied in industries such as chemicals, metallurgy, pharmaceuticals, and more, playing a vital role in industrial processes.
