Select chemical pump sealing performance criteria

Leak-free operation is the ultimate goal of chemical equipment, and this demand has driven the increasing adoption of magnetic pumps and shielded pumps. However, achieving complete leak-proof performance remains a significant challenge. Issues such as the lifespan of the isolation sleeve in magnetic pumps, the shielding sleeve in shielded pumps, material pitting, and the reliability of static seals still need to be addressed. Since chemical pumps often handle corrosive, toxic, or volatile media, their sealing performance is a key factor in determining their quality. When selecting a chemical pump, several criteria should be considered. First, the type of sealing is crucial. There are two main types of seals: static and dynamic. Static seals typically use gaskets or O-rings, with O-rings being the most common. For dynamic seals, packing seals are rarely used today, and mechanical seals have become the standard. Mechanical seals can be single-acting or double-acting, balanced or unbalanced. Balanced seals are more suitable for high-pressure applications (typically above 1.0 MPa), while double-acting mechanical seals are preferred for high-temperature, crystallizing, viscous, particle-laden, or toxic and volatile media. In such cases, an isolating fluid is usually injected into the seal chamber, with the pressure maintained 0.07–0.1 MPa higher than the process medium. Second, the choice of sealing materials is essential. Static seals often use fluorocarbon elastomers, and in special cases, PTFE is used. The materials for mechanical seals must be carefully selected—not all are made of carbide. While carbide is durable, it can be costly. Generally, the stationary ring is harder, and the rotating ring is softer, such as silicon carbide paired with graphite. This combination offers good performance at a reasonable cost. However, in extreme conditions—such as very high temperatures or media containing particles—both rings may need to be made of harder materials, depending on the application. Chemical pumps are widely used across various sectors of the chemical industry.
