Grape maturity management

1 Grapes are harvested in batches based on their maturity, and each variety has a different ripening period. The timing of the harvest is crucial, as it directly affects the quality of the fruit. When grapes are ripe, they appear shiny, with translucent flesh and a thick layer of bloom. Their flavor is rich, and the seeds turn brown. Harvesting too early can result in high acidity, while harvesting too late may cause the fruit to lose its flavor and become less durable during transport. Therefore, timely and careful harvesting is essential for maintaining grape quality. It is best to pick grapes after they have dried in the morning on a sunny day.

2 During the picking stage, it's important to manage drought and heat. Prolonged high temperatures or lack of rain can cause the leaves and fruits to shrink, which negatively impacts plant growth and the formation of flower buds. To prevent this, farmers should use grass between rows to reduce ground temperature and ensure timely, moderate irrigation. The recommended method is to dig a trench around the vine canopy and pour water into it. This helps maintain soil moisture without over-saturating the roots.

3 The second peak of root growth occurs during the ripening stage, making it an ideal time to apply fertilizer. About 60% of the annual fertilization should be applied at this stage. Organic materials such as manure, compost, and pond mud are highly beneficial, and they should be mixed with quick-acting fertilizers like urea or ammonium bicarbonate. For one acre of vineyard, it is recommended to use 3,000 to 4,000 kg of organic fertilizer combined with 30 to 40 kg of urea or ammonium bicarbonate. After applying the fertilizer, it’s important to cover the soil and irrigate promptly. Additionally, pruning of secondary shoots should be stopped during this phase to allow the vines to focus their energy on fruit development.

In addition to proper harvesting and fertilization, maintaining good vineyard hygiene is also essential. Regular inspection for pests and diseases can prevent losses and ensure that the grapes remain healthy throughout the growing season. Farmers should also keep records of their practices, such as when and how much fertilizer was applied, to better understand what works best for their specific conditions. By combining traditional knowledge with modern techniques, grape growers can significantly improve both the quality and yield of their crops.
