Gold decoration use maintenance tips

Do not stretch the "M" necklace clasp left or right

â—Ž Tips for maintaining gold jewelry

Zhao Fei, a sales consultant at the Old Temple Gold and Silver Store, has been working in the gold jewelry industry for four years. On June 23, she shared her personal insights on how to choose, wear, and care for gold jewelry.

According to Zhao, when selecting gold jewelry, the first thing to consider is the brand. The second is the style — choosing pieces that match current trends as well as your face shape and hand type. The third factor is the quality of craftsmanship, which can be assessed through the workmanship.

When it comes to necklaces and pendants, there's a matching rule: the weight of the pendant should not exceed half the weight of the chain. This ensures balance and comfort when worn.

If you're wearing a necklace with an "M" clasp, avoid pulling it left or right, as this could damage the mechanism.

When purchasing a necklace, check its flexibility. If the chain tends to knot easily, it may not be strong enough. You can also examine the solder joints — if they are uneven or poorly done, it indicates poor craftsmanship.

Never use toothpaste to clean gold jewelry

It's recommended to clean your jewelry once a month, ideally at a professional store. However, you can also do it at home. Simply soak the jewelry in warm water mixed with a mild detergent for about 20 minutes, then gently brush it with a soft-bristled brush. Avoid using toothpaste, as it can scratch the surface of gold. Even for silver items, toothpaste isn't the best choice.

Many people own various types of jewelry, such as platinum, 18K gold, and more. It’s important to store them separately when not in use to prevent scratches and damage caused by friction. As Zhao Fei, the sales consultant from the Old Temple Gold and Silver Store, explains.

Avoid contact with chemicals like perfumes

Gold jewelry should never come into contact with perfumes, lotions, mercury, or lead, as these substances can cause corrosion and damage over time.
