Talking about the localization process of tools

Our company specializes in manufacturing engine cylinder head covers for Volkswagen and BMW. We primarily use cemented carbide and PCD (polycrystalline diamond) cutting tools. The brands we work with include Marpa, Changzhou COSCO, and Shanghai Weishi. Annual tool expenses amount to several million yuan. I have been working in the cutting tool industry for nearly seven years. In April 2007, I joined Chery Powertrain, where I was responsible for complete engine tooling and tooling technology. Over the years, I've had extensive exposure to both imported and domestic tools, as well as regular training and new product launches from major manufacturers such as Sandvik Coromant, Kenner, ISCAR, Walter, Seco, Gaomet, Mapa, and Cobalt. This experience has given me a deep understanding of tool selection and the challenges of tool localization.
Tool Selection
Tools are made from various materials, including high-speed steel, hard alloy, PCD (diamond), CBN, and ceramics. Choosing the right material depends on the part being machined, as each tool has unique physical and chemical properties. For example, PCD is ideal for aluminum alloys, but it's not suitable for cast iron due to its low thermal stability at high temperatures. During machining, excessive heat can cause rapid wear or damage to PCD tools when used on cast iron parts.
Tool selection also depends on machine conditions, such as whether the machine has internal cooling, the type of cutting fluid, pressure levels, and the tool holder design. Even for the same operation, different manufacturers may offer various options that meet the same process requirements. A complete tool system includes both the cutting tool and auxiliary components like shanks, inserts, and cooling tubes.
Currently, many domestic tool manufacturers are still in an imitation phase, leading to a chaotic market with issues like mislabeling and reconditioned blades. Companies like Zhuzhou Diamond, Zhengzhou Diamond, Shenzhen Zhongtian, Sichuan Sentai Yingge, and Zigong Tools are among the most popular in the country.
Challenges in Tool Usage
(1) Poor job positioning for tool staff: Many companies, especially small ones, lack specialized tool roles. Operators often handle tools without proper knowledge, leading to inefficiencies and increased costs. Larger companies usually have dedicated tool engineers who can analyze and solve problems more effectively.
(2) Misuse of tools: I've seen cases where mismatched drill bits and taps caused broken tools. These issues arise from improper usage, leading to unnecessary tool consumption and higher costs. Many small businesses overlook the importance of proper tool handling.
(3) Deep hole machining: Machining deep holes with small diameters is challenging. Tools often break during the process, and while some solutions like milling before drilling exist, they don't always improve results significantly.
Challenges and Suggestions for Tool Localization
Despite the maturity of domestic PCD tool manufacturing, there are still gaps compared to imported tools, especially in precision and consistency. However, localization is becoming a trend due to lower costs, faster production cycles, and better support for customers. Domestic manufacturers now face both challenges and opportunities to innovate and build their own brands.
To improve, local tool makers should focus on R&D, enhance quality, and provide better after-sales service. Training users on proper tool application is also essential. Innovation, rather than just imitation, will be key to long-term success. While 3D manufacturing is growing, traditional methods will remain vital for large-scale production. The two can complement each other, driving the development of China’s manufacturing industry.
In my view, domestic tool manufacturers must prioritize innovation, build strong brand identities, and continuously improve technical capabilities. By doing so, they can play a crucial role in supporting China’s industrial growth and competitiveness on the global stage.
