Home security market warms up

The home security market in China has traditionally been dominated by industrial applications. However, as living standards have improved and people's awareness of safety has grown, the home security monitoring sector has started to gain momentum. With the rise of smart home systems, this segment is now attracting significant attention from industry players. Despite its promising future—often referred to as a multi-billion-dollar market—it still faces challenges and hasn't yet seen widespread adoption. What are the key barriers preventing this market from taking off? When will it truly explode, and when will home security products become common in households? These were the central topics discussed at the recent "Home Security Application and Technology Development Forum" held in Shenzhen. The forum, organized by Stellite Media and sponsored by the Shenzhen Semiconductor Industry Association, brought together over 400 professionals from the security monitoring and control industry, including solution providers, system integrators, terminal manufacturers, and consumer electronics companies. The event aimed to explore the current state of the market and identify pathways for growth. Feng Jun, General Manager of Sibico Microelectronics’ Monitoring and Control Division, highlighted that the security industry has expanded beyond traditional boundaries, entering an era characterized by integration and intelligence. He noted that the industry is transitioning from information acquisition to information utilization. The rising demand for security monitoring has also driven the adoption of CMOS image sensors (CIS) in IP cameras, with CIS chips accounting for two-thirds of the market. Feng emphasized that factors such as user awareness, product innovation, sales channels, and ease of use will be critical in driving the home surveillance market forward. Lu Zhiliang, Regional Market Manager at NXP Semiconductors, believes that for home security products to succeed, they must not only meet consumer expectations but also be user-friendly, high-performing, and reasonably priced. He pointed out that bandwidth limitations remain a challenge, prompting the company to develop low-bitrate, high-definition SoC solutions tailored for home security. Similarly, Sun Luyi from Ambarella Semiconductor stressed that a good home camera should be easy to install, perform well in low light, and offer low power consumption, smart features, and strong security. Data security is another major concern in home monitoring systems. Peng Lin, CEO of Inlay Technology, suggested that private cloud storage can help address these worries. He explained that private cloud solutions not only protect personal data but also enhance the smart capabilities of home security systems, making them more seamless and user-friendly. Several companies presented their latest innovations at the forum. Cheli Liuliu from Zhejiang Fengxiang introduced the Vanelife platform, offering services like home security monitoring, environmental optimization, and energy management. Han Bingdong from Marvell shared insights on home gateways and family cloud technologies, while Cheng Zhiyong from Fushi Kang showcased a cloud-based monitoring solution designed for convenience, security, and clarity. Li Wenjuan, a senior analyst from Srida Media, provided an overview of the market’s development and highlighted the opportunities and challenges in the civilian security space. She predicted that future smart homes will integrate routing, storage, control, and management into a central server. The forum concluded with an engaging roundtable discussion, where participants debated topics like price competition strategies and the role of home servers in the smart home ecosystem. Currently, China’s home security industry is still in its early stages, full of potential but also facing numerous challenges. Events like the Home Security Application and Technology Development Forum serve as important catalysts, offering fresh ideas and guidance to those working in this emerging field. As the market continues to evolve, it holds great promise for both businesses and consumers alike.
