Home security market warms up

In the Chinese security monitoring market, industrial applications have long been the main focus. However, in recent years, with rising living standards, growing security awareness, and the development of smart home systems, the home security monitoring sector has begun to gain momentum and attract industry attention. Despite its promising future and potential as a multi-billion-dollar market, home security is still not widely adopted in China and hasn't reached mass adoption yet. What are the key factors holding back the growth of this market? When will it truly take off, and when will home security products become a common household item? These were the central topics discussed at the “Home Security Application and Technology Development Forum” recently held in Shenzhen. The forum, part of the “Smart Home Series Forum” organized by the Shenzhen Semiconductor Industry Association and hosted by Stellite Media, brought together over 400 professionals from the security monitoring, system integration, terminal manufacturing, and consumer electronics sectors across Shenzhen and surrounding areas. Experts and industry leaders shared insights on the challenges and opportunities in the evolving home security landscape. Feng Jun, General Manager of Sibico Microelectronics' Monitoring and Control Division, highlighted that the security industry has expanded beyond traditional boundaries, entering an era of integration and intelligence. He noted that the security monitoring industry is transitioning from information acquisition to information utilization. With increasing demand for security solutions, CMOS image sensors (CIS) have become essential components in IP cameras, making up two-thirds of the market. Feng emphasized that user awareness, product innovation, sales channels, and ease of entry into homes are critical factors influencing the success of IP cameras in the home surveillance market. Lu Zhiliang, Regional Market Manager at NXP Semiconductors, believes that for the home security market to take off, products must be user-friendly, meet market standards, offer high performance, and be reasonably priced. He also pointed out that bandwidth limitations remain a challenge. To address this, NXP is developing easy-to-use, high-definition, low-bitrate, and low-bandwidth SoC solutions that cater to real-world needs. Sun Luyi, R&D Director at Ambarella Semiconductor, added that a good home network camera should be easy to install, deliver high-quality images even in low light, and feature low power consumption, intelligence, and strong security. These attributes are essential for consumer acceptance. Data security is another major concern. PENG Lin, CEO of Inlay Technology, emphasized that private cloud storage can help alleviate users’ worries about data privacy. By implementing a private cloud solution, home security systems can not only protect sensitive information but also integrate seamlessly into smart homes, offering a safer and more convenient experience. During the event, Cheli Liuliu from Zhejiang Fengxiang Technology introduced the Vanelife smart life platform, offering home security monitoring, environmental optimization, and energy management services. Han Bingdong from Marvell presented their technologies in home gateways and family clouds, while Cheng Zhiyong from Shenzhen Fushi Kang showcased an end-to-end cloud monitoring solution. Li Wenjuan, Senior Market Analyst at Srida Media, provided an overview of the current state of the security monitoring market and the challenges and opportunities in the civilian segment. She predicted that the future of smart homes will center around integrated servers combining routing, storage, control, and management. The final roundtable discussion was a highlight, with lively debates on topics such as IPC differentiation strategies during price wars and the role of home servers versus routers as internet gateways. Currently, China’s home security industry is still in its early stages. It is a market waiting for significant growth, and many challenges will arise along the way. The “Home Security Application and Technology Development Forum” served as a timely boost, offering new ideas and directions for companies and individuals exploring this field. It played a crucial role in advancing the practical implementation of home security monitoring solutions and driving them toward real-world adoption.
