Marble veneer cracking reasons and treatment methods
Outdoor marble finishes are often exposed to harsh weather conditions like frost, snow, and ice over time. As the years pass, the number of freeze-thaw cycles increases, which can lead to cracks in the marble surface. Poor quality of the stone, excessive color variation, or improper installation can result in weak areas on the wall. These weaknesses may be further affected by external forces, causing irregular cracks in the joints or hidden damage. The main causes of such cracks include: (1) Defects in the marble, such as uneven color patterns, blind seams, or hidden damage, can weaken the structure. If the installation is not done properly, especially around holes or openings, external forces from the building structure may cause stress concentration. When this force exceeds the strength of the marble, it can lead to cracking. (2) When marble is installed on exterior walls, near kitchens, bathrooms, or other high-humidity areas, rough installation and inadequate grouting can allow moisture and corrosive gases to penetrate the slabs. This can cause corrosion of embedded iron parts, leading to expansion and outward pressure on the marble, resulting in cracks. (3) In cases where marble is installed on curved or vertical surfaces, if the gaps between the slabs are too small, structural deformation under pressure can cause vertical stress on the marble surface, leading to cracks. To prevent these issues, the following measures should be taken during installation: (1) Marble should be installed after the load-bearing structure has been completed. At the top and bottom of the installation, there should be some clearance to avoid direct compression from the structure, which could otherwise crush the marble tiles. (2) The joint width between marble slabs should not exceed 0.5 to 1 mm. The sealing and grouting must be thorough, ensuring that no cracks or missing edges are present. This prevents the entry of corrosive gases and moisture, which can damage the embedded metal parts and eventually cause cracks on the surface. If cracks do appear in the marble, they should be repaired as soon as possible. Delaying repairs can lead to more serious damage, such as pieces of stone falling off, which can pose a risk to pedestrians or compromise the overall appearance and quality of the building.
Plastic fastener is used for corrossive environment, for different application, RMI PLAST offer PVC, PVDF, PP, PA6 materials, it is widely used for equipment and pipes which will touch corrossive liquid.
